Why our graduates love the University of Portsmouth

Hear from our graduates including our Chancellor Karen Blackett and Paralympian Lauren Steadman on why they're proud to be part of our community.

Your student loan goes further here

Portsmouth is in the top 10 most-affordable places in the UK to live as a student, according to the 2019 NatWest Student Living Index – so living and studying here won't break the bank.

Almost everything is in walking distance, so you won’t need to fork out on Ubers. You can save your cash for going home in the holidays. And with our excellent transport links to London and the rest of the UK, getting home is easy.

Not that you’ll be looking for excuses to go home: Portsmouth has so much to offer, you won’t want to leave: great nightlife, plenty of cultural activities and tonnes of restaurants, cafes, museums and shopping.

We're also one of the top 10 most affordable cities for new graduates, according to Universities UK, and plenty of graduates do choose to stay in the city once their degree is complete and their career has started.

Portsmouth is a fantastic student-orientated location. It’s not expensive to live in the city and there’s always something going on

Joshua Bulleyment, Operating Department Practice DipHe, now Clinical Skill Facilitator at University Hospital, Southampton

The city is a friendly, welcoming place

You’ll be greeted by miles of beautiful
beaches, pretty green spaces and a friendly, optimistic vibe.

The city sits just across the Channel from mainland Europe, and is home to people from every corner of the world. The same is true of our students, who come from more than 130 countries.

We also get some of the UK’s best weather: our springs and summers are sunnier and warmer than elsewhere in the UK, and our winters are milder.

Portsmouth is amazing! It has that busy city feeling, but without the chaos of bigger cities. The culture and friendly environment made me feel at home too

Teodor Zhelyazkov, Business & Human Resource Management BA (Hons),  now working for the University as Global Conversion Assistant

Whatever you’re into, you’ll find it here

We have societies and clubs for everything from Anime, Bhangra and Breakdancing, to Sci-Fi, Water Polo and Quidditch. And our gym and sports facilities are some of the best around.

There's plenty to explore outside the University too: Portsmouth has an active arts scene and talented makers, painters, musicians, writers and creatives.

Love gaming? Head to Dice Board Game Lounge or the video game lounge, Game Over.

Into cosy pubs and coffee shops? We've got both in abundance.

Vinyl collector? Feed your habit at Southsea’s record cafe, Pie & Vinyl, and grab lunch while you’re there.

And then there’s the nightlife: from the pubs on Albert Road, to the clubs at Gunwharf and near the Guildhall, to Victorious Festival every summer.

I joined the musical theatre society which was a lot of fun – and I made friends for life, who I still see on a weekly basis

Naomi Finn, Graphic Design BA (Hons), now Lead Designer at Paymentsense

You’ll get personal, academic and professional support

Nobody comes to university just to earn a degree: you’re here to grow as a person, to meet new friends, to learn more about your interests and to explore your potential career. We’re here to help with all of that.

Our Students’ Union (UPSU) is run for students, by students. It promotes your rights and looks after your wellbeing. UPSU is consistently ranked one of the UK’s top 20 unions, and can support and advise you on everything from housing to health.

We’ve also got a University wellbeing team who’ll look out for you while you’re with us. If you’re worried about money, health, housing, your studies or anything else, the team are on-hand to listen and help.

As for after you graduate: we’ve got that covered as well.

We’re number 1 in the UK for boosting graduate salaries*, thanks to our great links with industry; our Placement Officers who can fix you up with work experience at local, national and international employers; and our Careers and Employability service, where you can get expert, tailored advice on finding a job and developing your career for up to 5 years after you graduate.

I struggled with the statistics side of my course, but I got help from both staff and students – now I’m in a job I love, and I couldn’t have done it without that support

Jade Richardson, Forensic Psychology BSc (Hons) and MSc, now Forensic Psychologist in Training, HM Prison Service

You’ll be taught by exceptional lecturers in superb facilities

We build our courses so you learn the
skills you'll use in your career – you’ll practice in simulated environments that mimic work places, and we’ll help you use your professional skills in the community.

For example: our Dental students treat NHS patients in our Dental Academy, our Sport and Exercise Science students coach pupils at local schools, and our Law students run legal advice clinics for the public.

On some courses, you can study abroad to broaden your horizons, learn a new language and explore far flung places.

We’re one of a select band of universities with a Gold rating in the Government-backed Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) – which means our teaching, learning and student outcomes are outstanding and among the highest quality in the UK.

You’ll be taught by expert lecturers, many of whom have impressive industry experience and contacts. They’ll likely be working on fascinating research that will inform what they teach you.

The lecturers I had were so helpful and knowledgeable. Now, thanks to their experience, I make a difference to people's lives

Heidi Mathews, graduate in Diagnostic Radiography BSc (Hons), now Senior Radiographer at William Harvey Hospital
